Gregory and Carrie have embarked on a long-time dream to share the best of Northern Humboldt with guests to the Orick area. It will be the perfect place to launch adventures in and around Redwood National and State Parks.

The two have dusted off this little slice of history and are transforming the Iconic Palm Motel and Café, one of the few remaining motor lodges on Highway 101, into Roosevelt Base Camp. A small boutique motel with a vintage vibe. Offering unique rooms with both retro and rustic nudges and unfussy furnishings.

Gregory, whose family has been in Orick for generations, has explored nearby forests and beaches his entire life. At one time he offered guided horse rides through the giant trees. He worked alongside his dad building houses and developing properties when he was growing up, and later went on to become a civil engineer. Skills he loves to put to work any chance he gets!

Carrie was not born and raised in Orick, although now she can't imagine living anywhere else on earth! She looks forward to using her experience in the hospitality industry to make sure all the guests at Roosevelt Base Camp have the best possible stay in this beautiful place she now calls home.

Of course they couldn’t do this without Gregory's folks, Joseph and Donna Hufford, their life experiences and skills have been helpful in every part of this endeavor. Ideas, encouragement and hard work. Donna has experience in the lodging industry and is overseeing accounting for the project while Joe has been helping out with the renovations. Turns out he can do just about everything! They are both delighted at the change Roosevelt Base Camp will undoubtedly bring about in their community.

Between the two of them they have six children. Most people refer to them as the real life Brady Bunch. They like to involve the kids, Eden, Teagan, William, Kailah, Myrsadies and Braxton, to help whenever they can. But the family keeps them pretty busy enrolled in the “Hufford school of useful knowledge,” doing farm chores, gathering firewood for Poppy and Gaga in preparation for winter, helping repair fences, and guiding horseback rides with their aunties and cousins.

Carrie likes to emphasize their uniqueness, some of our rooms feature a private bedroom with a locking door. Ideal for families or even couples on extended stays who would like to have a little privacy while on vacation. Our rooms all have a homey atmosphere that makes you feel like you are staying in a quaint vacation home instead of a motel room.

Gregory and Carrie plan to reopen the old Palm Café, as quickly as they are able, as it is desperately needed in the community! They plan to upgrade where needed while keeping some of its vintage charm. Stay tuned for those developments.

In the meantime, enjoy the namesake Roosevelt Elk, which often wander through Orick, sometimes right through the parking lot, or graze in the meadow behind the Motel. North America’s largest subspecies of Elk, Roosevelts were named for President Teddy Roosevelt, an outdoor conservation enthusiast who stayed in Orick on a tour of the giant redwoods around nearby Prairie Creek, now part of Redwood National and State Parks.
